Codebreakers: Spy Games

Solve ciphers, decode secret messages, and complete collaborative spy missions.

Grades K–6The project mix and pace are tailored to the age group, experience level, and time available.

A combination lock used for a codebreaking challenge

Course description

What students make and do

Students become codebreakers for a series of age-appropriate missions. They look for patterns, use substitution and transposition ciphers, encrypt and decrypt messages, and design secret codes of their own. Games and team challenges make the underlying logic concrete and social.

  • Decode substitution-cipher messages
  • Investigate historical secret codes
  • Solve transposition and multi-layer cipher puzzles
  • Design and exchange an original cipher
  • Complete an advanced collaborative spy mission

Sample program path

How the course can develop

This example shows one possible progression. The order and depth change with the group and contract.

  1. 01Learn why ciphers are used and how keys work
  2. 02Decode historical and substitution-based messages
  3. 03Rearrange messages using transposition techniques
  4. 04Combine multiple methods in harder challenges
  5. 05Design a cipher and challenge classmates to break it
  6. 06Complete and explain a final spy mission

How we adapt it

Adapted for age, experience, and schedule.

Younger students use visual keys, simple substitutions, and team clues; older students can tackle multi-layer and digital codebreaking ideas. Beginners decode with provided keys, while experienced students design and explain original systems. Short formats complete one themed mission; longer programs add history, peer challenges, and a final showcase.
