Course description

What students make and do

This course takes mathematics off the worksheet and puts it into projects, games, and everyday decisions. Students may create geometric art, plan a mock budget, study symmetry in nature, measure objects and spaces, or collect and graph data. Activities can be adjusted to the grade band and skills of the group.

  • Create geometric art using symmetry and tessellation
  • Plan a mock event budget
  • Complete a nature-based math scavenger hunt
  • Measure spaces and calculate area, perimeter, or volume
  • Collect data, make graphs, and present a math-fair project

How the course can develop

This example shows one possible progression. The order and depth change with the group and contract.

  1. 01Build confidence through mental math, puzzles, and games
  2. 02Explore geometry through art
  3. 03Apply arithmetic to budgeting and everyday decisions
  4. 04Investigate patterns and symmetry in the surrounding world
  5. 05Practice measurement, equations, and data collection
  6. 06Create and present a final mathematical challenge

How we adapt it

Adapted for age, experience, and schedule.

Younger students focus on shapes, counting, patterns, and concrete games; older students can work with budgeting, equations, measurement, and data. Beginners receive guided tools and examples, while experienced groups tackle more open-ended reasoning problems. Short formats use a few themed challenges; longer programs cover several mathematical applications and a final fair.
