Course description

What students make and do

Students study how inventions and businesses begin with a problem someone wants to solve. They identify needs, brainstorm possibilities, create and test prototypes, and learn the basic parts of a simple business plan. The course ends with students presenting an idea and explaining who it is for.

  • Identify an everyday problem worth solving
  • Sketch several possible products or services
  • Build and improve a simple prototype
  • Define an audience, value proposition, and basic business plan
  • Create and deliver a final pitch

Sample program path

How the course can develop

This example shows one possible progression. The order and depth change with the group and contract.

  1. 01Explore invention stories and practice creative thinking
  2. 02Find everyday problems and brainstorm possible solutions
  3. 03Study what made major ideas successful
  4. 04Design and build a prototype
  5. 05Develop the audience, value, and basic business model
  6. 06Refine the idea and present a final pitch

How we adapt it

Adapted for age, experience, and schedule.

Younger students use drawing, storytelling, and simple physical prototypes; older students can develop audiences, value propositions, and more complete business plans. Beginners work from brainstorming prompts, while experienced students test and revise ideas more independently. Short formats move from problem to prototype; longer programs add business development and a pitch showcase.
