Course description

What students make and do

Students learn coding by making things they can play and share. Projects introduce sequencing, events, loops, conditions, variables, and debugging through Scratch, with introductory Python or JavaScript activities available for students ready to extend the work. The emphasis is on building, testing, and improving a complete project.

  • Animate a student’s name in Scratch
  • Build a maze game with character controls
  • Create a Flappy Bird-style game with scoring and variables
  • Solve text-based coding puzzles
  • Develop a collaborative two-player or original final game

How the course can develop

This example shows one possible progression. The order and depth change with the group and contract.

  1. 01Learn events and sequencing through an animated-name project
  2. 02Practice loops and syntax with short coding puzzles
  3. 03Build a maze and begin an original project
  4. 04Add cloning, scoring, and random variables
  5. 05Explore broadcasting, multiplayer logic, or text-based extensions
  6. 06Finish, test, and share final projects

How we adapt it

Adapted for age, experience, and schedule.

Younger students begin with guided Scratch animation and block coding; older students can add Python or JavaScript extensions. Beginners build from modeled projects, while experienced students add original mechanics and more independent debugging. Short formats complete one focused game; longer programs support collaborative work and a more substantial original project.
